This work of art from the 1950’s has an entire story to tell. The image is that of a professor in a red bow tie speaking to a group of students. The caption in the article is titled Do Colleges have to Hire Red Professors? The author then suggests that parents have the power to rid campuses of communists who clothe themselves under the banner of academic freedom.
The image in this magazine depicts the general feeling among the population during this period. At this time, Washington legislators had waged war against academic institutions whom they accused of harboring subversives and Communists. The legislators felt that the professors were instilling Communist ideals on their students and were therefore looking for ways to discredit their contribution (Nash).
