In times of stressful and emergency circumstances the body activates the sympathetic nervous system. The physiological modifications are formulated to help a human being to survive and respond to emergencies. The sympathetic response is part of the automatic nervous system (ANS). While the parasympathetic system controls the rest and digests requirements of the body, the sympathetic system is in charge of the fight or flight responses and during intense physical exercise (Kelly, 2004).
The effects of the sympathetic system under strenuous circumstances is to organize the nervous system to escalate the supply of oxygenated blood that has high nutrient levels to body parts that need it. Hormonal changes occur in the body with the production of Norepinephrine and Epinephrine (Kelly, 2004). The hormones are responsible for a situation called adrenaline rush. The Norepinephrine prepares the body for initial stages of an emergency and helps the body to return to normal function in the case of a false alarm. The Epinephrine is produced to improve the performance of the physiological effects that occur (Kelly, 2004).
