Review of the UH-OH Exhibition at the Hammer Museum
The Frances Stark UH-OH art gallery opened at the Hammer Museum on October 11th and runs till January 24th 2016. I had the opportunity to attend the exhibition on November 10th, 2015 and I had a mixed feeling about the entire exhibition. After attending the exhibition, I got the general feeling that Stark is someone who loves poetry. Although she has created art in different forms, one thing that was clear and one that I could see was that all her art work tell a story. No wonder Stark has describes herself as a poet. There are times, however, when I felt like Stark is someone who borders on the extreme, someone who wants to get people’s attention at all cost. And she does this best by courting controversy.
The things that struck me the most in the exhibition was the piece of art My Best Thing. I have often heard that Stark used this 2011 image to have virtual sex with men. This particular image attracted much attention from the audience (myself included) and it was clear that the image told a story of endurance. This particular image had been placed in a dark room and captivated people with its alluring combination of charm, rational rigor, and sexual charge. This particular piece art made me see Stark as someone who has little or no regard for personal boundaries. The fact that she named this particular piece after the penis of her former lover gave me a glimpse into her personal life and also presented her as someone who has had better memories turned bitter (Azimi, 2015).
The other works of art that I got to see during this particular visit were Behold Man, and the thought provoking How Does One Sustain the Belief in Total Babes. This image was presented in the form of writing and as such it was easy to understand the message that she was trying to pass across. The image titled If Conceited Girls Want to Show that They Already Have a Seat, Stark presents a witty image of a girl whose lower part is exposed and she is carrying the same seat that she is supposed to be seated on. What I found interesting about this photo was that the seat that her head was fully covered thus hindering her movement. The message that I grasped from this image was that conceited people always lack a sense of direction even when they seem to be heaved in a particular direction. In the image Why should you not be able to assemble yourself and write?, Stark presents an image of a lady that is in an uncomfortable position but is still writing. This means that one can still be a writer despite the conditions that they are immersed in.
The UH-OH exhibition was without doubt a success. On the particular day that I went, the exhibition had attracted numerous people who were all eager to see the works of this acclaime...
