S. in As If I Am Not There is a young woman from Bosnia who recently gave birth in Stockholm and wanted to forget her past in Yugoslavia, to the extent of having ill thoughts against about her newly born child. The memories of war are a burden on S. who contemplate leaving her child or even works killing it to break away free from her past (Drakulic 2-4). In the film Das Fraulein, the three main women characters interact in Zurich, with all having hailed from Yugoslavia before the Balkans war, but from the three major ethnic groups of Serbs, Croats and Bosnians. Ruza is a reserved middle aged Serb woman, who owned a cafeteria, Mila is a Croat with a dream of going back to the Balkans, while Ana a 22-year old a newly arrived Bosnian looking for work.
In As If I Am Not There is, the war suffering is depicted as having traumatized the girls and women who witnessed the horrors of war including rape and sexual violence. It is no surprise...
