ASSIGNMENT: What to do? Create an annotated bibliography for the debate. Answer all 4 questions for each speaker in the debate. See the student example document to help guide you.
First, create the citation for the essay. You can find the format directions in Owl Purdue Online Sources (Links to an external site.). Place this citation at the top of your assignment.
Second, write a paragraph that includes the following information about the debate and the speaker:
Summarize the debate. What is the speaker’s main claim (argument) in the debate? What are the most important reasons and evidence used by the speaker to support the claim (argument)? You are attempting to clarify the speaker’s point of view. You will need to listen carefully to find the thesis or main argument. You are listening carefully and taking notes first to assure you can mirror back the speaker’s point of view. Listening and active note taking or reading the transcript are important here so that you are accurate. Go back and review if you are not clear on the main point of this debate.
Evaluate the credibility of the source. Is the speaker an authority on the subject? Is his or her claim current, accurate, and objective? Just like you evaluate the source ( the person talking) in a conversation; you will need to evaluate this speaker. It’s not just what is said, but also who is saying it that helps us determine the value of the information. In the opening introduction and in the transcript you will hear and see information about the speaker. This information should help you answer the questions above. You may look up additional information about the speaker to help you better understand the platform and the speaker, however; in most cases this is not necessary.
Analyze the audience. For what audience was this debate intended? What knowledge does the speaker’s intended audience have about the subject? When we are in a group with others and a conversation is happening, we are all aware of our audience because they are there with us. In writing audience awareness can be more complicated because our audience is not present. Pay attention to where this debate took place and during what year it was first recorded to best understand the speaker’s aim. Pay attention to what the speaker says and what the speaker leaves out to better understand how the speaker perceives his or her audience.
Your reaction. What do you think about the speaker’s point of view? Do you agree or disagree with the speaker’s claim? Explain. Now that you have determined the parts of the debate and have processed it a bit, it is time to join in on the conversation. This is your opportunity to say what you think and to talk back to the speaker.
Attempt to complete at least 1 full- page, single- spaced in your response. See the example annotated bibliography on the following page. You will be answering all 4 questions for all 4 speakers. If you exceed one full page that is OK, but at least fill 1 full page for this assignment. It is essentially 4 annotated bibliographies in one, but all 4 share the same citation at the top.
