The play of Othello focuses on love, jealousy, race and gender set in Venice and Cyprus. To develop the plot of the story, Shakespeare uses language devices and the character of Iago is very effective in using language to create a web of deceits that ensnares the characters the story. There is more emphasis on language devices than literary techniques and language as power accomplishes this intention in Othello. Iago uses the language of power to manipulate other people. Iago is able to manipulate Othello to his advantage to the extent that he believes that his wife in cheating. Language can be a powerful tool, which persuades people, but can also be dangerous when used by unscrupulous people.
