One of the major problems affecting cities around the United States is high crime rates. The high crime rate is problematic for several reasons. One, cities are overcrowded by people with low or no incomes who cannot afford the basic needs: thus, they engage in crime for food and clothing. Two, poor people are the primary suspects in these cases. A significant example is a Safe Home organization report that highlights that 3.9 million crime cases have been conveyed to the FBI by local agencies (Safe Home. Org, 2022). Cutting crime is the primary mission for leveling up cities, which comes from having a town with a good quality of life, and access to job opportunities and government support is evident. All these perspectives are possible through the creation of employment. In this research, I plan on adequately defining the issue of crime and the various reasons that leads to people engaging in it. I will also offer multiple ways employment can lead to its reduction. For instance, since it is evident that most poor people are the primary culprits in committing crimes, having a job that offers them income will reduce their likelihood of committing crimes for basic needs (Omboi, 2020).
Up to this point, I have collected four sources, most of whom are research articles. Gad’s and Robert’s research article, “Influence of youth unemployment on crime rates in Mathare constituency, Nairobi city county, Kenya,” is my most important source explaining why unemployed youths engage in criminal activities. The research article “Mano Dura: the costs and benefits of repressive criminal justice for young people in Latin America” discusses how unemployment of youths results in high crime rates and the impact of the government’s stringent laws on unemployed youths.
