It is difficult to compare and study crime data because of the immense variation in crime and criminals. Hagan and Daigle (2019) noted that sources of information for crime and criminals vary depending on factors such as self-reports, victim surveys, and official statistics. Furthermore, the type of crime can be different; one crime can be one committed by the elite and another a traditional one.

The key demographics that influence criminality include gender, age group, race, and social class. Of these demographics, gender influences criminality the most, given that the majority of people arrested are males (Hagan & Daigle, 2019).

Family is an important socialization agent and influences delinquency to a great extent. Five problems associated with the institution of family that impact delinquency include unhappy home life, subcultural differences at home, the criminality of alcoholism of parents, lack of parental control, and absence of one or both parents (Hagan & Daigle, 2019).
How does a lack of education lead to a higher likelihood of criminality?
Lack of education limits legitimate opportunities. The lack of education puts one in a lower social class and poorer residence and increases their exposure to criminal opportunity. In addition, lack of education means children miss the opportunity to experience the school bonding that limits delinquency likelihood.

Religion impacts crime positively because attending religious services is associated with a reduced likelihood of committing crimes.
