Ladies and gentlemen, I hope that you are fine. Perhaps you have all heard of the American dream. What pops into your mind every time someone mentions the term? Well, for some people, it might mean amassing wealth and living life in the fast lane. Yet to others, it might imply getting a good job, building a home, and taking children to expensive schools. Without a doubt, people have different ideas regarding the American dream. I think most people, especially the youth, have misunderstood meaning altogether. Various media have misconstrued the meaning of the American dream to mean wealth, homeownership, and expensive holidays abroad (Hacker 35). Against these misrepresentations, I intend this speech to deconstruct the meaning of the American dream.
The founding fathers of the great nation of American envisioned a country where all tribes or ethnic groups would belong to one human race. They wanted a country that appreciated diversity and tolerance. Perhaps this dream explains why the Native Americans welcomed other groups and allowed them to build the economy. It was always about collective efforts, people coming together for a common purpose (Cornuelle 17). The economy significantly transformed from peasant agriculture to large scale production, automobile industries, and today it is an economic powerhouse. A country cannot prosper if its citizens do not have a shared dream. Therefore, the American dream is about personal and collective development.
