Introduction by Bigsby Literature & Language Essay (Essay Sample)

Read the introduction by Bigsby and answer the questions:
1. What does the author of the Introduction observe about the American Dream?
2. What can you tell about Willy Loman after finishing the Introduction?

"Introduction" By Bigsby
According to the author, the American dream faded due to the effects of the Great Depression in the 1930s. For most people, the American dream signified the success gained in a society that consisted of immigrants searching for a better future. However, the American dream came in different versions for various people. For instance, Willy Loman’s American dream consisted of his belief in the supremacy of material items as compared to spiritual ones (Miller, 1998, p. xxiii). Therefore, the author focusses on the dreams guided by ambition rather than those of human need. Thus, in his opinion, the American dream trusts in a better tomorrow despite the current challenges hence offering hope for future generations that believe in its power.
