Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson is the writer/author of the Declaration of Independence and the third president of the United States. He was also the central figure in the early development in America. In 1775-83, Jefferson served in the Continental Congress and Virginia Legislature and as the governor for Virginia a time when there was the American Revolutionary war (Mays 357). Later, he served as the secretary of state of the U.S and as the U.S minister to France. He also served as the vice-president under John Adams from 1735-1826. Jefferson was a Republican who believed that the national government needs to have a limited role in the life of its citizens. He was elected 1800 as the president to U.S president. Having served for two terms (1801-1809), Jefferson made significant contributions to the republic of the United States. For instance, the country purchased the Louisiana Territory. Clark and Lewis also explored the new acquisition. The president is remembered for promoting individual liberty and being a slave owner. He was a great planter; He retired to join his plantation in Virginia Monticello after leaving the office and assisted in founding the University of Virginia.
