Sigmund Freud’s personality theory has very valuable insights to help explore the character of Montag in Fahrenheit 451. Considering Montag’s behaviors and reactions after realizing that the books he has been burning for long have the required information for enlightenment, Freud makes clear the importance of bringing memories in the unconscious self to the conscious for one to understand what he has been going through. This is as Freud puts it, “Most people do not really want freedom, because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are frightened of responsibility” (81) explaining why most people would not questions rules in the society. While Montag has for long lived in a society where free thoughts are not allowed, his consciousness is risen when he meets Clarisse McClellan, a 17-year old girl, who is obsessed with nature and people. According to Bradbury, it is at this point that Montag faces disturbing events, as he follows the advice, “Stuff your eyes with wonder, he said, live as if you’d drop dead in ten seconds. See the world. It’s more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories” (11). This way, Montag realized, “There must be something in books, something we can’t imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house; there must be something there. You don’t stay for nothing” (Bradbury 63) and “If you hide your ignorance, no one will hit you and you’ll never learn” (57). This is what Freud means when he wants people to be awaken their unconscious self in order to learn more and understand themselves better as he says “Unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways” (Freud 22) and “Out of your vulnerabilities will come your strength” (43) showing the importance of reading the contents of the book to understand the world better.
In his personality theory, Friedrich Nietzsche is not after the pursuit of the American Dream thus fitting the description of Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby who leads a luxurious life forgetting his roots with the sole intention of pleasing the people he interacts with. Nietzsche argues, “Mankind does not strive for happiness, only the Englishman does” (46) because the enlightened people pursue meaning instead.
