Sigmund Freud’s personality theory has very valuable insights to help explore the character of Montag in Fahrenheit 451. Considering Montag’s behaviors and reactions after realizing that the books he has been burning for long have the required information for enlightenment, Freud makes clear the importance of bringing memories in the unconscious self to the conscious for one to understand what he has been going through. This is as Freud puts it, “Most people do not really want freedom, because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are frightened of responsibility” (81) explaining why most people would not questions rules in the society. While Montag has for long lived in a society where free thoughts are not allowed, his consciousness is risen when he meets Clarisse McClellan, a 17-year old girl, who is obsessed with nature and people.
