The African American Restaurant: A Monologue
Essay Instructions:
Inspired by Mandvi's play, you will write your own monologue that deals with some of the same themes as Sakina’s Restaurant– such as The American Dream, what it’s like to be a fish out of water, and/or clashes between cultures (ethnic, generational etc.) Try to personalize this by drawing on your experiences or your family’s experiences. Mandvi didn’t mention his family by name, but he incorporated some of their experiences into the experiences of the characters he created.
As Mandvi did, a monologue (one actor speaking) could have some dialogue within - even if it is just one main character telling the story. He/She/They can become or act out other characters during the monologue - as Mandvi did.
Monologues should be around 2-3 minutes.
