Children’s literature is often enhanced by the use of illustrations. In fact, some children’s literature could be described as more image than narrative. The use of imagery in literature can highlight important concepts within the story.
Think about your favorite picture book. Is it part of the canon of children’s picture books?

Without the pictures, “The Absurd ABC” would be less memorable since the pictures speak to the readers and complements the words. The book is effective for using simple images and overly detailed pictures would increase complexity. The second picture shows Conrad and Sally looking of the window where they hear something bump (Dr. Seuss 2). The images clarify and emphasize details about the story, which makes the narration free flowing (Seuss). The pictures explain the sense, which helps inspire visual thinking and improve engagement with the content.
Reading only the books chosen by others limits exposure to different types of literature there is likely to be limited scope even the choices made are not the true choices and only certain books are read. Thus, the one who chooses the book that are read by others indirectly influence knowledge and understanding. Illustrated books stimulate imaginations where the pictures are linked to each other to enhance the narrative continuity. There is a close relationship between the words and images, where the illustrations are a way of telling what is important in the text.
