Tyrannosaurus Rex's Prehistoric Life
Tyrannosaurus rex was a giant carnivore that lived about 65–66 million years ago. They have been deemed the most famous dinosaurs because they were among the first carnivorous species discovered. Its scientific name is Tyrannosaurus rex, and they were bipedal carnivores. They are also a genus of large theropod dinosaurs, and they were about 40 feet tall with a huge heads compared to other dinosaurs (Marshall et al. 286). It is mostly described as a perfect killing machine due to its ability to run at high speeds to catch what it wants and its very sharp and strong teeth that can crush bones (Hone 276). Its huge mouth contained 60 teeth, which could protrude to about 6 inches, and the crown of its teeth would shed and resow after approximately 250 days. It also had pocket-like recesses in the separation of its teeth, enabling bacteria to flourish, hence giving an infectious bite to its prey.
Conversely, Tyrannosaurus had tiny forelimbs, unlike its powerful jaws and large legs. The fact that the forelimbs were too small indicated that they could not reach the mouth or even grasp prey. Although it was difficult to differentiate between their sexes correctly, recent discoveries have enabled easy distinction between male and female Tyrannosaurus (Hone 2019). During reproduction in the female, the medullary bone is deposited in the inner wall of the long bone, and this does not occur in the male. Hence, using fossils, one can identify a female and a male Tyrannosaurus.
Furthermore, as of 2005, approximately 30 Tyrannosaurus species had been discovered, with slightly less than half having a significant amount of fossils. Creek, in 1990, they discovered one of the complete fossil skeletons, and it is currently named Sue. It is at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and is now on exhibition (Hone 279). This prehistoric animal is considered a large member of the coelurosaur family. They had a life expectancy of 28 years and would go through a growth spurt in their teenage years. A fully grown Tyrannosaurus weighed approximately 9 tons. Also, its bite could exert a force of approximately 12,844 pounds.
Additionally, they are members of the Tyrannosauroidea family, and their distinction is mainly because of their two-fingered hands. According to Marshall et al. (286), they hunted in packs or alone. They ate meat, and primarily their food was herbivorous dinosaurs, which were the likes of triceratops and endmontosaurus. The hunt was made possible because of their large, thick skulls and long jaws of 1.2 meters, which enabled easy crashing of bones.
