Describe the points of the readings that seemed the most important to you or affected you the most.
For the rice growing people of Guinea-Bissau and West Africa, rice is a food is considered an important source of nutrition, but it is also integrated in the ceremonies and rituals of the people. The identity of the Jola (Diola) in the region is closely intertwined with rice farming, and the economic activities of these people depend almost entirely to rice farming. The political and economic structures influence rice production among the Jola, and the elderly seem to revere rice farming even as changes in environmental conditions cause lower yields. The Jola still hold onto rice production even when there are more viable economic activities since rise is part of their personhood and social life.
