Biomes
Grassland Biome
The first biome is Grasslands which generally receive 500 to 1,500 millimeters (20 to 60 inches) of rain in an average year. While temperatures are often extreme in some grasslands, every season experiences about 15 to 35 °C. Grasslands are mainly composed of different types of grass including, purple needlegrass, wild oats, foxtail, ryegrass, and buffalo grass. Grasslands are inhabited by many wild animals including, elephants, bison, cheetahs, gazelles, lions, tigers, rabbits, gophers, prairie dogs, birds, lizards, and snakes. Plants have deep, spreading root systems that allow strength and long narrow leaves to conserve moisture during drought. Animals, especially predators, have camouflage for cover, paws to burrow holes, and well-equipped digestive systems to digest grass.

The biome's principal plant types include trees, vines, palms, mosses, orchids, and ferns. Sitka spruce, western hemlock, Strangler fig, and Giant Red Cedar are tree examples. The biome hosts mammals like sloths, jaguars, tigers, monkeys, orangutans; reptiles such as caimans and anacondas; amphibians such as frogs; and birds, toucans, macaws, and the harpy eagle. Camouflage, mimicry, limited food, poison, reduced stature, and nocturnality are adaptations for animals living in the jungle. Plants have buttress roots for support; Others seek the light by growing on the branches of towering trees.
