Introduction
Urban development and globalization are two main concepts that greatly depend on each other. However, both concepts only occur once the necessary factors are` achieved and boundaries disbanded. After its competition in 1821, the Erie Canal became the driving force behind Michigan and New York’s urbanization and globalization. The Erie Canal museum captures this historical moments through epic features and structures. Therefore, this paper seeks to examine the relationship between urban development and globalization using Erie Canal’s geographical position, history, and economic power.
The canal encouraged more inflow of people to the area. On its website through the Weighlock gallery, the Erie Canal museum uses images and artifacts collections to illustrate the movement and influence of European immigrants along the canal in the 19th and 20th centuries. As a result, the canal fostered a population surge and opened regions further west to settlement. For instance, Borchert (2014), notes that due the Erie Canal, population and settlement in Western New York dramatically surged from 2, 400 in 1825 to 8700 by 1830. The population was greatly boosted by the ease by which foreign workers and immigrants accessed New York. This includes the population of Irish immigrants who formed towns along the Erie Canal’s route during their time as construction laborers. Currently, the area has a population of 2.5 million. Interestingly, 75% of that population lives within 40 kilometers of the Erie Canal and the museum.
