Genetically Modified Foods
Genetically modified organisms refer to the modifying of plants or organ’s DNA sequence through insertion or removal of a sequence in order to achieve the desired traits such as drought tolerance, herbicide resistance and insect resistance among others. Over 90 percent of the soy crops and grains in the United States have been found to have undergone genetic modification. Technology has seen the eradication of traditional farming routines in a means to promote commercial agriculture. Genetic modification raised the concern that GMOs will contaminate other crops and will result in other health complications. Those in favor of GMO’s argue that they are safe and do not pose any health threats. They view it as the only means to solve the food problems that arise. Those against it claim that they are unsafe and should be eradicated. Scientists also argue that further research is being conducted so as to come up with safer products such as the “enviropig” which reduces high phosphorous content by 60%.
The question of whether genetically modified crops could alter the environment is majorly dependent on whom the question is directed to. Most scientists do agree that most safety issues that come with genetically modified foods do not majorly affect people but the environment. The article argues that genetically modified crops are a solution to solving food problems.
