Memory Upgrade: More RAM for More Speed

Essay Instructions:

Pretend (or not) that your laptop computer is performing slowly. Based upon what you've learned in this module, you determine that it needs a memory upgrade. Search the web to learn more about current memory modules available to increase memory capacity. Evaluate the differences among various options, including type, size, speed, and price. Find a website or two that gives recommendations for upgrading a laptop's RAM. How do you determine the type and correct amount of RAM to add? How do you determine if you aren't already maxed out on what can be installed? When is it better to upgrade the memory or buy a new laptop? (yippee!) Write up your response in a document file and upload. A great website to get you started is www(dot)pcpartpicker(dot)com

RAM and Memory
Taking advantage of reliable semiconductor memories requires one to incorporate semiconductor memory chips onto memory modules or PCBs to increase the capacity of PC or laptop memory capacity. There are two types of memory modules available in the market today. These include the single in-line memory modules or the SIMM and the personal computer memory card international association (PCMCIA) cards. SIMM is used in most modern laptops and PCs and contains several DRAM chips ins a single line with 30 or 72 pins (Wonder). On the other hand, PCMCIA cards have 68 pins in 2 socket rows each containing 34 pins. Since most modern PCs and laptops contain PCMCIA slots, it is recommended to go for PCMCIA cards. PCMCIA cards have memory chips with battery-supported ROM, E2PROM, or SRAM, and the most common type 1 with a thickness of 3.3 mm is used while type 2 and type 3 are only applicable for fax cards and hard disks. Another important factor to consider when purchasing memory modules is the capacity as too little memory significantly slows down laptops and PCs.
When choosing the right memory, it is important to consider the operating system (OS) of a laptop or PC. Windows 7 machines require at least 4 GB of RAM while Windows 8 and 10 will need at least 8GB of RAM to work ultimately. However, for data-intensive programs or applications such as video gaming and editing, a higher memory capacity is required such as 16 GB of RAM. The architecture of the ...
