A memory play, The Glass Menagerie, depicts its action from the narrator's (Tom Wingfield) memories. Tom is one of the characters in the play; the play has several characters, including Laura Wingfield, Amanda Wingfield, and Jim O'Connor. The play was authored in 1944 by Tennessee Williams. In the play, Tom is depicted as an aspiring poet; he was sent to St. Louis in 1937. The play's background is also drawn from the 1930s, the Great Depression, and the Wingfield family is portrayed as a low-income household. (Williams, 2011).
