Wikipedia analysis paper
Wikipedia has grown since 2001 and has 24 million articles, more than 4.1 million in English and editions in 275 languages (Verderber and Sellnow 160). However, despite its popularity, the reliability of Wikipedia varies and depends on the attention that has been given to every article. Wikipedia allows anonymous people to add or edit the content as they wish without requiring that the information be verified before it is published to the public. Therefore, despite its widespread use, Wikipedia cannot be used authoritatively in scholarly work.
An article about Gregor Mendel in both Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregor_Mendel) and Encyclopedia Britannica (academic.eb.com.eznvcc.vccs.edu:2048/EBchecked/topic/374739/Gregor-Mendel) proves inaccuracies of the information in Wikipedia. Firstly, the article has undergone numerous changes over the last one year as a result on new information being added and numerous editions. The introduction has been extended to include more information that was not included. More citations have been added for information that was not properly referenced, typos corrected, sentences clarified and replacement of dead links with active ones.
The changes were made in order to improve on the accuracy of the article and present the life and career of Gregor Mendel more accurately. Since the article is historical in nature, there is conflicting information because individuals source from different materials. Some phrases were not clear hence they have been corrected to make them easy to understand. Some of the sources cited at the time an author updated the article no longer work. This necessitated that the dead links be replaced with active ones. Some of the sentences had poor grammar with misspelling and wrong use of quotation marks. Editing of these sentences helped in ensuring that the article is easy to understand.
