The Fertile Crescent is one of the most crucial regions in the history of the revolution of agriculture and settlement of communities. The area was characterized by being occupied by complex societies that depended on the agriculture. Agriculture was flourishing in the region due to the impact of the natural environment, with agriculture developing into the main economic activity in the Fertile Crescent region. The region makes is important in history due to the development of agriculture and the complex societies that it had.
The role of the natural environment and climate in the development of agriculture in the Fertile Crescent region
The Fertile Crescent is also referred to as the Cradle of Civilization. It is a cultural area shaped as a half-moon located in the Middle East in Asia. The area is characterized by an arid or semi-arid climate and it is associated with some of the ancient civilization developments in the Old World (Gьl, Yilmaz, Gьndьz, Keskin, Cemal, Ata, & Цnel, 2020). Geographically, the area is centered around the main systems of Euphrates and Tigris Rivers. It includes such countries as Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, Palestine, Kuwait, Turkey, and Iran.
One of the primary factors that contributed to development of civilization in the area was the presence of agricultural resources and water supplies which resulted from the fertile silts which the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers deposited (Riehl, 2016). The two rivers also provided the important transport that was required through the entire region, and this contributed to the growth of the earliest city states as well as such civilizations as Sumer. Several cultural developments such as the wheel, writing, glassblowing, and construction of canals for irrigation were also developed in the region.
How the natural environment shaped the development of complex societies in the region
As mentioned earlier, the region was characterized by complex societies. Notably, the development of the societies in the region was significantly influenced by the natural environment and climate of the area. For instance, cereals were grown in such areas as Syria in as early as 9,000 years ago (Al-Quraishi, Qader, & Wu, 2020). Researchers discovered prehistoric seedless figs in the Jordan valley, implying that planting such trees was practiced around 11,300 years ago. Further, the Fertile Crescent region boasts of an impressive record regarding early human activity. The region possesses several sites with the cultural and skeletal remains of both early modern and pre-modern humans, and later Pleistocene hunters and gatherers. The climate and natural environment in the region supported such lifestyles and human activities as hunting and gathering, before they shifted to agriculture due to the supportive climate and environment.
