The Pocahontas film is a Disney recreation and reanimation of true events that happened sometime in the past. It is based on real historical characters, although much of its ahistorical accuracy is still a matter of much debate. The film actually revolves around Pocahontas, the name that Matoaka was well known by. She was the daughter of the chief of the Powhattan confederacy. She is her dad’s favorite, and appears to be very playful, just as her name means. The film also has its producers do the delicate balancing act between the relevance of its production at that time, and the historical exactness of some of the depictions therein.
When it comes to the historical aspects, the movie fails to clearly establish a real solid base for the accounts in its narration. There are only a few aspects about it that are indeed historically true and exact. First is that she was commonly known as Pocahontas but had the more personal and private name of Maroaka. Secondly, she was the only child, which is evident from how much she is adored by the dad. Disney does a great job when it comes to clearly bringing out the cultural setup of the society in which Pocahontas lives in. There is some sense and feel of childhood nostalgia.
