Response to the Reading
This reading is about one of the French renowned and decisive urban planners in the history of the country. Even today, more than 100 years since his death, Georges-Eugène Haussmann has always divided opinion among different people and groups. Notably, from the reading, it is apparent that he is credited as the man who helped transform Paris into the City of Light. Some people view Haussmann as a master planner who should be celebrated for the role, he played in making Paris a great city. At the same time, others term him as an imperialist megalomaniac who was not only arrogant but also disturbed many lives by building his renowned large roads through the city's slums with the help of the French army. In this sense, I believe that he helped transform Paris, but this also resulted in destroying the lives of many people, especially the poor ADDIN CSL_CITATION {"citationItems":[{"id":"ITEM-1","itemData":{"ISSN":"1527-5493","author":[{"dropping-particle":"","family":"Jordan","given":"David P","non-dropping-particle":"","parse-names":false,"suffix":""}],"container-title":"French Historical Studies","id":"ITEM-1","issue":"1","issued":{"date-parts":[["2004"]]},"page":"87-113","publisher":"Duke University Press","title":"Haussmann and Haussmannisation: the legacy for Paris","type":"article-journal","volume":"27"},"uris":["/documents/?uuid=5d9d8695-279e-44e9-b43b-af73697c7cd2"]}],"mendeley":{"formattedCitation":"(Jordan)","plainTextFormattedCitation":"(Jordan)","previouslyFormattedCitation":"(Jordan, 2004)"},"properties":{"noteIndex":0},"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"}(Jordan).
According to the reading, some of the actions by Haussmann could have been motivated by greed to enrich himself by filling the city with cobbled streets, bland buildings with stone facades and wide, dead straight avenues to enable the army to suppress the citizens. During his tenure, Haussmann was involved in the construction of current French famous buildings as well as clearing space to find a home for several buildings. For example, he ordered the demolitions of more than 12, 000 buildings in slum streets in Paris to enhance findings of space for the Palais Garnier, home of the Opéra National de Paris. Notably, Haussmann did take part in the demolition and destruction of many informal settlements to pave the way for new buildings, marketplaces, new train terminals, and wide roads and avenues. As a result, based on the reading, Haussmann is a man who divides opinions as some view him as a master planner who helped transform and develop Paris. In contrast, others see him as an inhumane person who destroyed the lives of many Paris dwellers ADDIN CSL_CITATION {"citationItems":[{"id":"ITEM-1","itemData":{"ISSN":"1527-5493","author":[{"dropping-particle":"","family":"Jordan","given":"David P","non-dropping-particle":"","parse-names":false,"suffix":""}],"container-title":"French Historical Studies","id":"ITEM-1","issue":"1","issued":{"date-parts":[["2004"]]},"page":"87-113","publisher":"Duke University Press","title":"Haussmann and Haussmannisation: the legacy for Paris","type":"article-journal","volum...
