A Description and Comparison between Hassunan and Halafian Society
Introduction
Hassunan and Halafian societies date back to around 5000 BC in northern Mesopotamia. The two societies are famous in their art of pottery and primitive, tribal beliefs, rituals, and viciousness. This paper is to describe and compare both cultures based on the findings on the discovery of their societies. It will throw light on both cultures and their regional, artistic, and religious activities.
Hassunan Culture
Hassunan culture thrived in northern Mesopotamia, dating back to the sixth millennia BC. Tell Hassuna, which named this society, is situated in Iraq (Bryce and Birkett-Rees 34). The Hassunan lived in small mud houses founded on one to hectares. They developed many small rooms in those small settlements. The maximum number of brick rooms was ten adjoining to a court area. They also developed many spaces to dry and store grains. The discoverers found the remainings of dried wheat, grinders, sickles, stone hoes, and other tiny things to verify the survival of Hassunan farming and storage of grain (Bryce and Birkett-Rees 34). The exploration of Hassunan society also found the remainings of animals. Animal bones discovery refers to the fact that the people had goats, horses, hogs, cows, and sheep. Hence, two primary interests of Hassunan culture surfaced: cultivation and animal raising to support them in farming (Bryce and Birkett-Rees 34). The third remarkable information related to the lifestyle is metallurgy. Besides animal fossils and grains, there were copper pendants, ornaments, and metal fragmentations. The Hassunan society is categorized by an assortment of containers, adorned with ready-made decoration—herringbone designs embedded these ornamentations. The pottery also had geometric patterns on the outer surfaces. There were also clay female figurines indicated the afterlife conviction of the inhabitants.
