The author is Xuanzang who is an educated Buddhist monk in China. The story is about his travels to India in 629. He spent sixteen years abroad before finally returning home. The purpose of his travels is mainly religious. Xuanzang was impressed with the way of life and culture in India. It can be noted on his observations on their towns and villages, on Buddhist studies, on caste and marriage, and on their manners and justice.

The author is Marco Polo who is part of a prominent family known for long-distance trade in the regions of the Mediterranean and Black sea. He is writing about his travels across Eurasia in 1275 on a journey with his father and uncle. During his stay in Hangzhou, he was impressed with the place and the environment as he described it in great detail. He also described the trading and the market in Hangzhou and the way of life of the people. These things have mostly impressed Marco Polo during his travel, observing the difference in culture between Europe and China.
His remark about the food that people of Hangzhou eat illustrated his trait as a Christian foreigner, in the passage “and you must know they eat every kind of flesh, even that of dogs and other unclean beasts, which nothing would induce a Christian to eat.”
