Museum Visit Journal
Art Museums and Galleries can often be overwhelming environments. This journal assignment aims to focus your attention on what you see so you can apply class knowledge to works of art. For this assignment, you’ll be visiting a museum virtually. This means you get to choose from almost any major museum in the world!
What to turn in on the due date:
1. Scanned copies or photos of each page of this journal complete with answers to the questions included here and your sketch. You will submit this to Canvas via a portal under Assignment Museum Visit Project.
Guidelines:
Go to the Google Arts and Culture page that provides access to some of the world's biggest art collections: https://artsandculture.google.com/partner. Choose one museum's collection to explore. Next, after virtually exploring the museum space for awhile (take your time and enjoy), choose ONE artwork to focus on for the 2nd half of this journal.
To take a virtual tour, simply click on the person icon in the top right corner of your chosen collection page.

1. Now that you have had a chance to explore the museum, think about which work/s of art caught your attention. Narrow it down to one. Go back to that one work. Look at it without any other distractions. Set a timer for one minute. In that one minute, write down anything and everything that comes to mind. Do not think too hard. This is all immediate response to your work. Write this activity down here:2. You are now tasked with sketching out your work. This is only to help you see the details of the work. I am not grading this based on how skilled you are as an artist, but by how much time and effort is displayed in your sketch. This activity will help you answer the questions below. Feel free to turn this around if your work has a horizontal (landscape) orientation.3. Now you can observe the work a little more closely for a deeper analysis. Using KEY TERMS from class lecture, provide a formal analysis of each element you find in the work. Not all works display all of the elements listed below. In that case, write “Non-Applicable” and explain why. For example: If a work is made of marble, then explain that white stone does not really require an analysis of color.
