The country is currently being faced by a humanitarian crisis, which can be attributed to the violence happening to the north and eastern parts of the county. Different tribes in the northern and eastern parts of the country are currently fighting against each other which have led to over 200,000 people being displaced. This includes farmers from the region (World Health Organization np). The violence is as a result of in-fighting among ethnic groups in the country. There have also been groups from Mali which are engaging in war with the citizens of Burkina Faso. This has led to most of the land in the northern parts being abandoned which are used for farming since farmers fear for their lives. Burkina Faso has a population of 19 million with over 90% of the citizens involved in the agricultural sector (World Bank Group np). Cash crops grown in Burkina Faso include maize, sorghum, and millet (Faulkner and Mackie 56). These are the staple foods in Burkina Faso. Due to the continuing violence in the country, this has led to farmers abandoning their crops to escape the violence. This has led to a shortage in the amount of food for citizens in the country. Since January this year, thousands of farmers are living in camps which have led to a shortage in the crop yield. This has resulted in more than 1.5 million citizens being affected by the shortage in the amount of food (World Bank Group np). For the citizens living in camps, they have had to rely on relief food from the united nation world food program. The shortage has led to malnutrition in the people living in the camps.
