What could possibly go wrong with attempts to replace the Electoral College?
In the 2016 presidential election, Republican Donald Trump lost the nationwide popular vote against Democrat Hillary Clinton by more than 2.8 million votes. Still, he won the Electoral College and the presidency by74 electoral votes. The Electoral College does not necessarily reflect the will of the majority, where there is more emphasis on winning the battleground states. There is likely to be disagreement on whether to elect the president via the popular vote as some states will lose their electoral power, and voter turnout may decline if there is a belief that one’s vote does not matter.
