In "Closer Ottoman Ties," Michael S. Casey focuses on Abdullah II's efforts, the Sheikh of Kuwait, to building closer ties with the Ottoman Empire. Later, Mubarak signed an agreement with the British ceding some powers to them. Abdullah II became the Sheikh of Kuwait in 1866 when the Ottomans expanded their influence in the Arabian Gulf region. The shift in power in the Gulf region left the British vulnerable to losing power. Kuwait's Sheikh had not signed the General Treaty of Peace in 1820 or the 1861 Maritime Treaty, unlike other Sheikhs who made peaceful relationships with the British (Casey 42). Sheikh Abdullah II intended to maintain stability, and forging ties with the Ottoman Empire was one way to achieve this.
Before Abdullah II's leadership, Kuwait's marine and navy trade has been under British support, but the Sheikh moved further away from the British. Ottomans were reluctant to help the British in Kuwait when the British increased their commercial ties and activities in Kuwait. ...
