We will focus on two important developments that occurred in world history during in the late 18th and 19th centuries: 1) the way the lives of ordinary people were changed and 2) the attempts by Europeans and Americans to establish control over non-industrialized nations in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Loss of Woolen Spinning, 1794
The author of this article describes a detailed account of the life of many families before and after the advent of mechanized spinning. The article is published in 1997 by Paul Halsall, and in it, a description of how the spinning technology changed the economy and people's way of life is provided. Halsall published the document to tell the story of industrialization from a first person perspective and the experiences of different families as they tried to cope with the changes that were brought about by industrialization. Any change in the mode of production, no matter how small, transformed the society’s way of life and effected a wave of change in the world. “Changes in modes of production, particularly the emergence of the factory system, resulted in wholesale transformation in the daily lives of millions around the globe” (801).
Halsall paints a clear picture of the plight of families, particularly mothers and daughters, who were employed in the cottage factories before the spinning machines were invented. The cottage industry provided employment to many households, and families were able to sustain themselves. However, for all the good it brought, industrialization also had its disadvantages.
