W.E.B. Du Bois is an American author and scholar. Du Bois’ “Black Reconstruction in America” is arguably among the best books to have been written to address the Reconstruction subject. He was born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, an area characterized with mixed ancestry, African, French, and Dutch. Du Bois was educated at Harvard, Fisk University, University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Berlin. Du Bois has taught at both Atlanta University and Wilberforce University. He also authored many books that dealt with the Negro race as well as a playing a leading part in the advancement of the movement. Du Bois also created The Crisis where he served the role of editor from 1990-1932.
This book offers readers a valuable retort against the Dunning School racist historiography by offering his economic and historical analysis. Du Bois’ main arguments are that the African American Agency worked very hard in the building of the modern America and promote freedom and equality to realize the democracy promise. Similarly, Du Bois mainly argues that the white supremacy interfered with and undermined the project of liberation, Reconstruction, especially within the American South. Basically, some corrupt White supremacist organizations and politicians like Jim Crow Laws and the Ku Klux Klan who battered Black people’s freedoms by using terrorist violence (Bhambra, 479). Additionally, the white supremacists created a lot of tension between the white and black working class members which eliminated completely any chance of achieving multiracial class solidarity.
The book challenged the prevailing historical views that the era of Reconstruction of American was a disaster for both the South as well as the country as a whole. Undoubtedly, white historians from both territories, North and South, have documented history with bias. Most Reconstruction period accounts have done the Negro gross injustice. The urge to erase the war bitterness has unquestionably led various historians to consult in their earlier treatment of the South over the period. The supposedly uniform condemnation chorus accorded to the Congress acts should have set off the various critical historian suspicions. Du Bois' record in this book somewhat marred by race-consciousness or class-consciousness, but he has indisputably presented a reputable service to the historical scholarship.
However, the author did not make much effort to iron out the labor's exploitation history onto the flat purposive plane history. He disavowed History. Additionally, the pathway between the forward and backward of the Black Reconstruction story was not as such common, or yet parallel, relative to ownership to labor (Disch et al., 243). However, this was true, but it was also more. This path was somewhat through the worker, the white and Black workers, which both backs of the modern industry and feudal agriculture depended on.
