America Moves West: Definitions
After the Civil war America began to move west from around 1865, during a time called the Gilded Age. This was a time where America underwent great economic and industrial growth marked by great events in history and achievements by various people. This text will mainly focus on the importance of these people and events. One event is the Homestead Act. This event allowed for vast acres of unused land in the Prairies to be put to good agricultural use, where mostly crops cultivated were grain, planted in large fields. The Homestead Act also saw the improvement of some machines with the help of people like Cyrus McCormick, who developed the reaper and the combined harvester, and Pillsbury, who improved the refining of grain. The other event is the Wounded Knee where men, women and children were massacred due to a newly formed religion, which was a mixture of Native American beliefs and Christianity. They were brutally murdered just because the white settlers perceived this religion as a threat to them.
The Haymarket Square Bombing, is also an important event in history, where workers who were being overworked and underpaid tried to unionize, but the Americans did not want it because they thought these union workers were communist immigrants who would take away t...
