We the People
‘We the People’ are the first words of the total fifty-two in the United States Constitution's preamble. ‘We the People’ is a subject denoting that the American citizens (and to some extent non-residents) created the Constitution and thus, ascribe to the core values that the Constitution aims to achieve. These values are liberty, justice, effective governance, democratic government, and equality (introduced after the Civil War). In this case, the people are sovereign, meaning that the Constitution can govern them directly, which was a different situation to the government under the Articles of Confederation, which governed the people indirectly through rules imposed on the states. ‘We the People’ has a major significance in communities around the U.S., particularly ours, which consists primarily of international students living in Penn State Abington and liberty benefits we enjoy.
Our international students' community has witnessed the impact that the preamble has on us and, more precisely, the liberty it affords them. First and foremost, the constitution has provided us with the opportunity to gather and share our opinions regardless of our nationality. This possibility is never disregarded because, in the extreme, we have witnessed countries that restrict the mobility of non-residents geographically.
