The Statement of Purpose, National Organization for Women, provided several measures to be put in place for the women of the United States to be accorded opportunity and freedom of choice. The first measure was to take action both nationally and regionally to agitate for equal opportunities and freedom of choice for women. The action would ensure that women are provided with ample opportunities in government, industries, churches, education, science, and other disciplines that men dominated. The actions would call for eliminating the prejudice and discrimination extended towards women when it comes to work opportunities (Foner 1017). The second measure was to agitate for the deprecation of the traditional assumption that a woman has to choose between being a mother or a wife on the one hand and engaging in serious industrial or professional work on the other. This traditional assumption had been used against women, leading to the low number of employment opportunities for them. To ensure true equality of opportunity and freedom of all women, the NOW campaign would call for the establishment of childcare centers around the country. With such centers in place, women do not have to entirely retire from work until their children have come of age. The campaign suggested that establishing such centers was crucial and would help increase work opportunities for women.
The other measure employed by the NOW campaign was to demand a true partnership between the sexes. One such demand was to change the then concept of marriage....
