Introduction
The Progressive Era was a period of widespread social activism and political reform across the United from early 1890 to late 1920. The main objective of the Progressive movement was to eliminate corruption in government, formulate antitrust laws, grant suffrage to women, and provide a solution to the negative effects of industrialization. Even though the Progressive Era reduced corruption and strengthened the political rights of Americans, its benefits were limited to white Americans. Other minorities such as African Americans continued to encounter injustice and isolation during this era. This paper aims at describing the major themes of the progressive Era, the associated achievements, and the legacy of the Progressive Era.
Major themes
The major theme main during the Progressive Era was the elimination of corruption. Corruption was viewed as the source of the injustices that the federal government and industries practised. To combat corruption, progressive movements targeted political representatives, political bosses, and parties (Tindal & Shi, p 941). The movements also supported the prohibition of alcoholic drinks across the country as a way of reducing the political power of local bosses based in saloons. Other than reducing corruption in public offices, progressive movements believed that an attack on the political class would lead to the formulation of anti-trust laws against corporations and allow women to vote
