Background Information
Television has made it easy for people from different parts of the country to access all types of information. With access to hundreds of channels through cable and the internet, the news gets to all parts of the country within seconds. In the early days of television, news and drama series were the main attractions to television. However, politicians realized they could reach thousands of people through the television and mass media. Eventually, television has become a means where politicians get to debate and present their agenda. Recently, these debates are recorded live, and some allow for views to send and weigh in their views during the debate.
Politicians will use these debates to sway voters in their direction. The first presidential debate was in 1960, and it pitted Richard Nixon against John F Kennedy. In that year, millions of Americans had access to television. Americans watched the debate to see how each candidate responds to challenging questions and observe their body language. The 1960 showed that half of the American voters had been influenced by Great Debates, while 6 percent claimed that the debates alone had decided their choice (History, n.p ). Though attending television debates is not a constitutional requirement, many candidates opt to attend them. In addition, the format of these debates is decided by a non-partisan committee. They can be viewed as the interview process of candidates by the public. The debates are part of all types of American races for political office. These debates are essential to the aspiring candidates who prepare vigorously with the hopes that they will change the minds of undecided voters. Teams from both sides spend time planning and preparing their candidates for these debates. The debates usually end up being major television events and have political pundits analyze each word and exchange between the candidates.
Television debates provide an avenue for voters to listen and analyze what their favorite candidate hopes to achieve if they are elected. The televised events give voters a chance to identify and interact with their candidate of choice and decide if they are good enough for the electoral post. The very first televised events are usually the most important. This is where the candidates from both republican and democratic parties are introduced to the voters. In the primary events, candidates present their ideas in a competitive debate, answering questions from journalists. It is a significant clash of ideas between opposing ideals and beliefs. It is in these debates that candidates must bring in their best skills. Voters are looking at each candidate not just to put a face to a name, but they are judging the candidate.
