One-child policy
Introduction
The 70s and 80s were a time of population growth in most countries. With the availability of resources and job opportunities, it was the perfect environment for global populations to prosper. As for China, however, this wasn’t a natural population growth; it was a population explosion. The government of China implemented the one-child policy in the late 1970s intending to limit Chinese families to one child. This policy was implemented to address and manage the high rate of population in China, which was perceived as being too high. In return, this policy was intended to reduce both economic and social challenges which were linked to the rapid population growth. This policy caused huge implications which affected the lives of the Chinese citizens in different ways. The literature evaluates and explains how the one-child policy of China facilitates loneliness among the Chinese people.
Perception
I was born in early 2000 at a time when the one-child policy was still enforceable in China. Having been the only girl in my family, I grew up alone and did not have siblings to talk to and interact with. This has significantly impacted me since I was small because I did not have someone I could share my problems with; even if I had a few friends that I could talk to I believe that talking to a best friend is not similar to sharing challenges with a sibling. Additionally, there is usually a certain kind of holistic growth when a kid generally grows up around other siblings. It strengthens family ties while also helping the kid to learn certain aspects of growth, such as communication, very quickly.
Additionally, children who were brought up during this time when the policy was in effect faced isolation, and they sometimes relied on imaginary friends. These children are also likely to develop hatred and avoidance more than their counterparts who have siblings (Fishwick, p.3). It is also essential to comprehend that this policy also made many Chinese families develop a preference for boys; this further promoted sterilizations, and abortion cases increased. The personal sacrifices which the parents made to their only children were transferred to them in terms of extreme expectations and attention, and this has impacted the people born within the period in which the policy was in place to consider it their responsibility to make their parents proud. Ideally, individuals born under the one-child policy are regarded as the lonely generation; and because of the society in which they were brought up in, they rarely think about others in the community rather than their parents.
I vividly remember that since both of my parents were working, I always spent a lot of time alone. Although my parents loved children, they were contented having me since parents were threatened of losing their jobs if they added another child. I often felt lonely and deserted, especially when my parents were away at work. However, my mother frequently tried bringing my cousins at our place, and sometime I would visit them; this helped since I did not have anyone else I would interact with. This ensured that at least, I could grow normally like other children...
