Position Paper on Mobile Technology in Classrooms
Mobile phones nowadays are part of the norm of society. It has various uses that apply to daily activities, both for work and leisure. But using mobile phones has been a longstanding issue without any standard regulation as to whether it should be allowed when students are inside their classrooms. This paper aims to argue that the change in school policies are needed due to the advantages that mobile technology may bring to the students and the institution.
Disadvantages of Allowing Mobile Technology in Schools
Various schools all over the country also have different rules regarding the use of mobile devices. 66.6% of the surveyed institutions do not allow the use of mobile phones at any given time in a school day, and the gadgets should be placed inside the student’s lockers at all times (Mupinga). Due to the advancements that increase the ease in communication when using mobile technology, it also makes it easier for the students to be distracted and to violate classroom rules, specifically regarding cheating and bullying. These serious offenses are somehow encouraged due to the lack of monitoring that can be done when all the students have easy access to their mobile phones even during their time in the classroom. In line with this, the policy allowing mobile phones cannot be regulated by the faculty of the institution and this may result in the student’s exposure to inappropriate non-school related websites.
