Sloboda: English 050

Story #3/Overnight #6

This SHORT STORY is called the “mini-double-up.” It is really two very short stories. Each very short story centers on the same event, but each is told (in first person) from the point of view a distinctive character. Differences between the points of view create tension.  At least one shared object must appear across the two very short stories. Each one should also include a list.

Keep in mind that no point of view is omniscient. That is, each very short story should have moments of unreliability. These will add interest as readers endeavor to reconcile the two perspectives shared. Note too that how each character processes events is far more important for this assignment than what happens—or the plot.

The individual narration of each character should run between 300 and 500 words. Your submission in total, then, will be between 600 and 1,000 words. When formatting your work, practice good manuscript etiquette. That means including your name, page numbers, and a title (or two titles, if you prefer). It also calls for double-spacing text for readability. I will deduct 10% from any story or poem that fail to uphold these basic standards of presentation

Note that this class adheres to the University’s policy on academic integrity, outlined in the Student Handbook. You should familiarize yourself with this policy. Anyone caught plagiarizing will fail for the semester. If you have questions about documentation standards—required for use of any secondary material or assistance—then consult me immediately.

The completed assignment is due via Canvas (Drop Box) by midnight on Wednesday, 4/22. Or, you may e-mail it directly to the professor at: [email protected]. Please consult me if you have any questions about this assignment.

Along the road
Gowing up in a suburb of North Carolina, it was hard for me to adapt to the big city – New York City. It has been almost a year now since I moved out of my parents’ house and lived independently. I got accepted to one of the most prestigious universities here with a scholarship, and I just couldn’t let the opportunity slipped away.
“Class valedictorian – Daniel Valle,” I walked up to the stage as our high school principal called my name. It was one of my greatest achievements, and my family was so proud of me, especially my grandparents. My parents have always been busy with their careers, that I technically grew up with my grandparents. When I left for college, I promised them that I would ever visit them if my schedule permits.
However, I wasn’t able to do so even during the holidays because of my academic load. I have been active in our university organizations and have been maintaining my QPA grade to avoid losing my scholarship. My parents would just come and see me whenever they attend conferences in New York. “Danny, come home and visit us. Even just for a few days. We missed you,” my grandma called. I missed her so much, and I wanted to visit them, but I just couldn’t find the time yet. “I’m sorry, Grandma. Maybe next summer. My schedule is just too hectic right now,” I answered. “Oh, Danny, your favorite festival is coming up. Your grandfather wanted to see you before we go on vacation in Europe. Are you sure you don’t wanna come home?” she asked. Oh right, it’s almost time for the French Market and Seafood Festival.
In the following week, I didn’t have classes, so I came home. Since my parents are on a business trip, I stayed with my grandparents. We went to Raleigh to join the festival. We went there together but in a separate car along with my best friend, Samuel.
But along the way, a collision happened. My car swerved on the opposite side to avoid the accident. Unfortunately, my grandparents weren’t able to avoid it and crashed. The driver of the vehicle that collided with the was drunk and was killed, too. It was too sudden that I couldn’t move and act. There was a lot of commotion. The police and ambulance arrived at the same time. There I learned that both my grandparents died on the spot due to the collision. In a blink of an eye, I lost 2 of the most influential peop...
