Full Count is a short story on the various events that force Milton Young, who has already established himself as a baseball phenomenon, to give up on playing college baseball and go back home. However, hope is restored for him through a stranger. The story of this young man leads to two major questions regarding education and Young’s education; what is the impact of a parent’s death on the future of a child’s education? What is the role of the community in giving hope to the young generation to pursue their dreams despite humble backgrounds? How far can determination take one in life? Young’s dream of playing college baseball was dealt a major blow by his father’s death, but David, a stranger, gave him hope of pursuing his dream and living a better tomorrow.
According to Young’s path in life, how far can determination take one in life if one does not give up on their dreams?
Milton Young is on course in the pursuit of his dream of playing baseball at the college level, but this dream seems short-lived as a series of events force him to abandon it and return to his farm, despite having fought hard to get a way out of his home town. The main reason he moved out of his time was his determination to play baseball and rise above poverty. When at home, he faces various personal and economic hardships, and later faced even a greater crime; he has to defend himself against a tragic crime with the possibility of spending life in prison. However, the story develops into an interesting one about triumph, faith, perseverance, and the struggle of holding on to a dream. The death of his father leads to financial constraints, and it is during this time he is accused of crime, showing that the death of a parent exposes children to both financial constraints and moral decay in the society. However, the society, through David, has the obligation of restoring faith and hope as they pursue their dreams. This gives me motivation on pursuing my dreams relentlessly, despite the challenges I face. I have learned from this story that although the circumstances may be challenging, I should keep pressing on.
This question opened up various points to consider. For instance, I was left to figure out how much I would have achieved by now if I had not given up on some of my dreams. I also noted that the group members could easily make connections between the question and the theory because the questions raised related directly to their personal lives. I think it was easy for them to make the links because the discussion helped them to relate the situation to their real life history. My thinking about this question also evolved because of the discussion because it enabled I realized that although some dreams look bleak sometimes due to life situations, giving up should never be an option. I felt challenged and purposed to pursue my dreams regardless of the obstacles faced.
Young’s father’s death was one of the major setbacks in his life. What is the impact of a parent’s death on the future of a child’s education?
Milton Young establishes himself as one of the key baseball players for his college, something he achieves...
