Describe the process by which the residents of Do Kay came to develop a consensus understanding of the meaning of HIV?
The residents of Do Kay formed a consensus about the meaning of HIV through the process of acquiring knowledge that began in 1983-1984, with the residents considering HIV as a disease of the city characterized by diarrhea and mainly affecting gay people. From 1985 to 1986, it was termed a blood sickness, having poor blood or bad blood caused by shocks, dissatisfaction, anger, and fear. The end of the Duvalier dictatorship opened the country to more information about the new disease as ‘sent’ sicknesses by the U.S. or sorcerers. In 1987, health campaigns, interviews on the radio, and deaths of three residents built a consensus among the residents. It was believed to be caused by tiny microbes, sorcery, sleeping with a person with the disease, and one poor person sending it to another needy person (Farmer 9-11).
What cultural and structural factors shaped their understandings and their vulnerability to infection?
The deep-rooted poverty in the village of Do Kay, cultural beliefs of sorcery, and U.S. hatred shaped the resident’s comprehension and vulnerability to HIV. The loss of the fertile land of Do Kay led to poverty among the residents, making them HIV disease for the poor. Their cultural beliefs on the existence of sorcery informed their arguments that sida could be sent to a person due to jealousy. Additionally, the deep-rooted hatred towards the U.S. for stating that HIV came from Haiti also informed their understanding of HIV being a disease of America, sent to Haiti under its influence (Farmer 14).
What happened over time to help flatten this variance and create agreement in their understanding of HIV/AIDS
As Manno, Anita Joseph, Dieudonne, and Celhomme, residents of Do Kay, fell ill and died exhibiting different symptoms, the residents made observations that resulted in an agreement and understanding of HIV. The residents concluded that HIV occurred due to sleeping with an infected person or sorcery (Farmer 14-15).
