Social Media during COVID-19
The start of the year 2020 had been very rough for me and for people all over the world. There are cases of volcanic eruptions, forest fires, assassinations, but the most challenging that the world is still dealing with right now is the COVID-19. This virus is killing thousands of people and has already spread in many countries, regardless of economic standing and location around the globe. As an action against the further spread of the virus, governments have implemented mass testing, and disinfection, but the most life-changing are social distancing and community quarantine.
The need for isolation and social distancing has led to a massive change in our lives. This includes people of all age, gender, nationality, and status. Classes are suspended and only essentials such as food, toiletries, and medications, are given priority when going out. Not to mention the effects of these in the economy of the country and the livelihood of the citizens. During this time of crisis, I have seen the power of social media and how technological advancements are beneficial to the world, both from big international agencies and to normal citizens like me. Being inside my own home for days, weeks, and now counting into months, have made me realize how different life was prior to the spread of COVID-19. Before this virus, everyone was living normally, going to school or work, running errands, hanging out with friends and family, which changed in just one snap. Suddenly, we are not allowed to do these things anymore. And, the best way that we are able to cope is through social media.
For years, I have read numerous articles and studies about how social media had improved the quality of life of human beings, but of course, there are also some negative consequences and changes as generations go by, although I was never able to truly appreciate social media because of the way it was always accessible enhancing the way we live and communicate. Now that there are already many restrictions and rules, I have seen the benefits of social media more. These benefits include the efficiency with the dissemination of information, the presence of various entertainment, and ease with reaching our loved ones (White).
