1 What is Modernity?
Modernity (modern era) refers to the historical, social, and economic changes that occurred during the transition from middle ages to the beginning of postmodernity. Modernity majorly occurred between the 15th and 16th centuries which enlightened the society with improved technological innovations in art, literature, economic and social science (Bauman, 2013). Modernity is considered to end before the Second World War, which dominated Europe and North Americans. During this period strong political associations emerged, capitals were formed and urbanization making a major step forward. Modernity slowly reduced the dominance of traditional religions and culture, this rapid change led to wars during this era.
2 How does Mignolo describe the relationship between Modernity and Coloniality?
Mignolo (2018), describes colonialism as the underlying reason for modernity in Western Europe. Rapid development in political science and aggressive for a larger economic share was the reason for colonization in Africa and Asia. Mignolo blames modernity for the slave trade, formation of Caribbean and invasions of Europeans in Abya Yala.
