Challenges Faced by People with Invisible Disability Like Diabetes

Essay Instructions:

The point of this project is to not just highlight the people and their invisible disability but also the 'so what'-- what are their challenges with both the disability and the world around them (e.g. at work), how can we make sure they are 'seen,' what role do they play or how do they participate as an important part of our society? By examining these life-limiting conditions, we can acquire a better, more concrete, understanding to help remove society’s judgmental stigmas and dismissive treatment surrounding them.
For your multimedia project, you will create an essay that incorporates multiple modalities-- your essay will include 500-750 words of text as well as two additional modalities to support your information. Your essay should have a minimum of 4 sources (2 for your explanatory text and 2 that are the medium citations). (Links to an external site.)
Your essay should include 500-750 words of explanatory text, at least one image, and one other modality (e.g. podcast, video, infographic, etc):
Explanatory Text (500-750 words). Your presentation should have some explanatory text. Whether it is on a wiki page or slide presentation, you need to have an introduction that contextualizes the group and creates a verbal portrait of them- who they are and why they are important. It should have information on how/why they are invisible and how we can recognize them. Include significant data to explain their unique position in our society, using your resources from critical research you conduct through class activities.
Minimum 2 Multi-media "Text": In addition to traditional written text, your essay should have a minimum of 2 additional media to help support your piece. Remember these media act as paragraphs basically in your essay.

Unlike visible disabilities, invisible disabilities like diabetes cause unique challenges for people in social places and working environments. According to ADA (Imbroll and Cassar), the employer is often unaware if an employee is diabetic because diabetes is highly unlikely to impact an individual's ability substantially. But this does not mean that challenges are not faced.
Challenges Faced by People with Diabetes
The challenges faced by people with diabetes can be classified into two: challenges resulting from the disability and challenges in the world around them. In other words, people with disabilities are not the same as the general population. The difference comes because they have the extra task of managing their condition. Thus, how they operate and react to the challenges of the disability causes their interaction with the environment, such as workplaces, to be different.
Challenges from the Disability
As a disability, diabetes is a condition that requires management daily. This means people should always have provisions on how to get insulin regularly, have foods or drinks that may raise blood sugar where necessary, a need for lifestyle adjustment to continue functioning normally, blood pressure monitoring & recording, and a continuous need for management education. More importantly, diabetes causes a financial and emotional burden to the person and their families. These can lead to stress, depression, and emotional detachment from social spaces. In a recent epidemiological study involving 90,686 part...
