Jay Chou is a Taiwanese Mandopop artist, songwriter, actor, and film director with a successful career spanning two decades. He has managed to attract a massive following in China due to his very distinctive style of music and his songwriting prowess. Chou’s longevity in the music industry has been attributed to his creative ability and gifted sense of melody. He is credited for creating a new and unique style of Chinese pop separate from Western or Japanese pop but combining both eastern and western classical flavors. By artistically integrating pop, R&B, and rock, Chou popularized the Chinese music style (zhongguofeng). Besides his creativity, Chou is recognized for bringing fashion and entertainment to the Chinese music scene: Chou has not only sold over 30 million albums globally but is also the founder of a clothing line and music distribution agency.
The Taiwanese actor has also worked in the film industry in several high-profile films, including Kung Fu Dunk, Initial D, Curse of the Golden Flower, The Green Hornet, and Now You See Me 2. He has also tried his hand in esports investment, screenwriting, and directing. On the whole, Chou’s versatility and ability to maintain his audience’s interest for over twenty years is what has made him an icon in China (Fung, 2007). Despite his achievements in China and neighboring eastern nations, Chou has employed several strategies to open up the western market. The first marketing strategy that has allowed him to grow his fan base relates to his creative ability. Chou’s style of music is distinctive from either eastern or western music, and his background in classical music makes his music more relatable to a western audience (Zhao, 2020). By integrating hip hop, R&B, rock, and some facets of traditional Chinese music. His songwriting ability is also something that adds to his singularity and appeal.
