The emergent decline in the demand for potatoes due to negative health concerns associated with the product could be remedied by restructuring the marketing strategies. Restructuring the marketing approach would necessitate rethinking the target market and the media relations. Currently, the industry is facing some stigma due to increase in diabetes among children and a rise in consciousness of carbohydrate intake. The new approaches must ways to dispel these fears and illusions around potatoes as a product, and find an effective channel of media to create awareness.
The U.S. Potatoes Board should reach the teenagers, serving in the entertainment industry and the populations that may be deficient in vitamin C and potassium. One of the reasons for the fall in demand is the packaging of the potatoes and the presentation of the product to consumers. Targeting restaurants in sports centers, cinemas, national events, and fast food restaurants which serve the potatoes in more exotic forms will grow the demand for the products significantly. Teenagers and the young generation accounts for the largest segment of the population, hence devising creative ways to reach them as the market would be lucrative.
