On Mayl, 2019, Burger King released a new product series, "Real Meals." Burger King partnered with Mental Health America on the idea as a platform to raise awareness for Mental Health Awareness Month (which is May).[1] Critics have come out in full force over this campaign. Some have asserted that the campaign is a cheap shot at McDonald’s iconic Happy Meals, while others have criticized the brand for exploiting mental illness.[2] Burger King’s stance is that the campaign is reminding its customers that "it's OK to not be OK,”[3]

Your task:

  1. Find and read a minimum of four articles on the subject. You're free to use the ones cited here as two of the four.
  2. Based on what you read and your own opinion (which you must be able to back up with research), answer the following question: Does Burger King's campaign truly support mental health?

The main objective of this report is to conduct sufficient background research on whether the Burger King campaign supports mental health. There are a couple of practices associated with mental health. The main reason for piloting this report is to verify the claims that “mental health rarely gets the credibility it deserves.” Some of these practices include: knowing your rights, setting realistic goals, surrounding yourself with positive people, among others. As per your request, the intention is to analyze whether the incorporation of “Real Meals” with Mental Health America is achieving the purpose of supporting its goal.
Twitter saw adverse reports of people criticizing and making fun of the brand. Most of the people on Twitter saw the entire idea from Burger King as copied and so not authentic. The Global CMO, Machado Fernando, indicated that their primary goal is not for people to purchase their burgers. Machado said that “we are not making money with this campaign. It is all about raising awareness of the fact that it is ok to express your emotions and that you do not need to be happy all the time.” Besides, the global CMO went ahead to specify that the campaign contributes to Mental Health America. The intriguing part was that he was in a position to turn a negative into a positive.
