Part 1: Essay plan
1] Topic:
Government surveillance and convenience are issues that have received much attention in the media and among the public; as more people learn about spying and tracking of private data. The discovery that the National Security Agency (NSA) had been involved in widespread spying highlight the challenges of preserving privacy in the digital age. According to Martin, Rice, and Martin (501) even IT professionals acknowledge the need for protecting privacy and private data in organizations. Various forms of surveillance invade privacy, but they are also given a sense of security. Surveillance technology helps the government monitor criminal activities, promote good citizen behavior, and create safer environment for everyone.
2] Research question:
To what extent is government surveillance beneficial, and are people willing to trade convenience for increased surveillance?
3] My plan:
Researching the topic- 1 day
After mapping out ideas on government surveillance and convenience, then I will evaluate whether there is a need for further research. I will mainly look at previous research and even opinion articles to understand the points of contention and evidence supporting and opposing government surveillance.
Outlining the essay-1 day
The next step is outlining the essay, and I will focus on my initial thoughts and research. The outline is important since I will provide details that are required to finalize the essay. Each paragraph will include one idea and supporting evidence in the final essay. Additionally, there will be interpretation of an analysis of the ideas to link them to the topic sentence.
Proofreading, editing and revising the draft essay- 1 day
The next step in the plan is proofreading, editing and revising, the aim is to improve the draft. I will look at the structure of the draft essay to evaluate that the arguments made and develop the ideas fully. If there is irrelevant information, this will be removed. Additionally, I will look into whether there is a need for more sources. At this stage, I will also check for grammar, punctuation and this ensures that the work is quality as there is re-evaluation over time.
Finalizing final draft – 2 days
The last step is finalizing after revision, and this is the final version of the essay. I will change things for the last time, proofread more checking for spelling, grammar and punctuation. This is followed by checking whether the alignment guidelines have been met.

The threats posed by internal and external actors, especially coordinated terrorist attacks caused a rethink of surveillance that changed from targeted to mass surveillance. Even as there is protection of human rights in the Constitution, this has been ignored when implementing mass surveillance, but there are those willing to give up privacy if this is thought to improve the safety and security of the country.
